Joseph Pennell's title pairs a fruit boat with a view from his Brooklyn apartment, so the picture is less a portrait of a single ship than a vantage point over the working harbor. Drawn in watercolor and gouache over charcoal, it was reproduced as a facing plate in his 1925 memoir, *The Adventures of an Illustrator*. Pennell, who had built a reputation for drawing industrial cities, returned again and again to New York's docks, bridges, and shipping, and this sheet shows how he worked from the window with a sharp eye for the harbor's clutter and light.
