Joseph Pennell's etching, titled for the bridges seen from Brooklyn, turns the East River crossings into the subject rather than the backdrop. Pennell, an American printmaker and illustrator, spent much of his career drawing the industrial and architectural character of cities, and he was fascinated by the engineering of New York's spans. Printed in sepia in 1921, the plate reflects the decade when the city's bridges were central to its growth and to its public image. The warm tone softens the steel lattice and cables, so the structures read as both machines and monuments.
