The drum corps of the 61st New York Infantry posed at Falmouth, Virginia, in March 1863, when the regiment was encamped with the Army of the Potomac across the Rappahannock from Fredericksburg. Drummers of that era were often boys in their early teens, and their job was to beat the calls that set the rhythm of camp life and carried orders in battle. Timothy O'Sullivan, who had worked for Mathew Brady and later for Alexander Gardner, made the photograph during the army's winter encampment there. The picture offers a rare look at the musicians behind the regiment's daily routine, and the drums are worth noticing as working instruments rather than props.
