The ballroom of the Academy of Music in New York, on November 5, 1863, is the setting for this wood engraving of uniformed officers and their partners dancing at a ball. The celebration honored the officers of Russian warships then visiting the harbor, a gesture of goodwill from a nation that had stayed friendly to the Union during the Civil War. Winslow Homer, who later became one of America's best-known painters, signed the design, which ran in *Harper's Weekly* later that month. The crowded floor and the mix of military dress and formal gowns show how closely the city followed its foreign guests.
