Taken on September 16, 1862, the day before the battle, this group portrait shows members of the 93rd New York Infantry at Antietam, Maryland, where the armies clashed the next morning. The fighting on September 17 remains the bloodiest single day in American military history, so a picture made in the calm before it carries an unusual weight. Regimental portraits like this were often made for soldiers and their families, and the photographer is not named in the catalog record, whose details come from a later auction lot.
