Unlike most views of Union Square, this stereograph records a specific event: the great Union meeting held there on April 20, 1861, a week after Confederate forces fired on Fort Sumter and began the Civil War. The crowd gathered to affirm loyalty to the federal government in a city with many residents who had sympathies on both sides. Published by E. Anthony as card No. 3, the image was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the crowd and surrounding buildings a convincing sense of depth.
