A grim news photograph from George Grantham Bain's collection records a man killed by a bomb during an anarchist disturbance in Union Square on March 28, 1908. The gathering was a demonstration by unemployed workers, many drawn in by anarchist speakers, in the hard times that followed the Panic of 1907. When police moved to break up the crowd, the explosion stirred widespread fear of anarchist violence in New York. Bain, a working news photographer, documented many such street events, and his pictures are valued for their immediacy.
