Foley Square, in Lower Manhattan near City Hall, is the setting here, and the photograph shows the U.S. Federal Courts Building as it looked around 1936, the year the courthouse was completed. Its monumental neoclassical design, with a broad facade and a classical colonnade, reflected the government's view that federal justice deserved an imposing civic presence. The photograph was made by Wurts Bros., a New York studio known for architectural views, and its copyright notice suggests it was issued commercially. Pay attention to the open plaza in front of the building, which shows how the square was laid out as a formal approach to the courts.
