Printing House Square, at the edge of City Hall Park, was the heart of New York's newspaper trade, and this engraving shows the New York Tribune's new building there as it appeared in 1875. The Tribune had been founded by Horace Greeley in 1841, and Greeley died in 1872, the year before the new headquarters was begun. The image ran in *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper* in May 1875, so it records a building that was then fresh and meant to project the paper's stature. Wood engravings like this were the main way city readers saw new architecture before photographs could be reproduced in newspapers.
