Few New York streets in 1908 held as many grand hotels as Fifth Avenue, and this view records that stretch of the avenue. It was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that sold travel views of American cities, and the catalog number 070800 places it among the company's many street scenes. Fifth Avenue was becoming the city's most fashionable address for shopping and hotels, and the Fifth Avenue Hotel near Madison Square, opened in 1859, was one of its best-known landmarks. The record notes a cracked negative, which is worth keeping in mind when examining fine detail.
