Drawn from Long Island, this view looks across the East River toward the southern tip of Manhattan, showing the city's waterfront and rooftops from the opposite shore. The sheet is dated only to the 1770s, but its subject ties it to the Revolutionary War, when New York was a contested port. British forces took the city in the fall of 1776, after the Battle of Long Island, and held it until 1783. The drawing appears in two standard references, I.N. Phelps Stokes's *Iconography of Manhattan Island* and a Library of Congress checklist of Revolutionary-era graphics. The ink and watercolor give the scene a careful, detailed quality worth studying in the skyline.
