Bedloe's Island, spelled Bedlows in the title, lies in the harbor just southwest of Manhattan and is known today as Liberty Island. Before the Statue of Liberty was dedicated there in 1886, the island held Fort Wood, a star-shaped masonry fort built in the early 1800s for harbor defense. A view from the water toward the city shows how the island and bay framed the approach taken by the many travelers and immigrants who arrived by ship. The shelflist card gives no date, so the year the picture was made remains uncertain.
