Mott Street, the lane at the heart of New York's Chinatown, is the setting for this color halftone of a drawing by Raymond C. Ewer, published in the November 28, 1914, issue of *Puck*, a humor weekly known for its vivid color cartoons. The title sets up the picture's point: while the rest of the city rushes ahead, the neighborhood seems to hold still. Spread across two pages of the magazine, the image reflects how illustrators of the period often portrayed Chinese American life in New York as a world apart, and it rewards a close look at what the artist chose to include and what he left out.
