Main Street in Port Jefferson, on the north shore of Long Island in Suffolk County, was the commercial spine of a harbor village that had grown from 18th- and 19th-century shipbuilding and maritime trade. By the years between 1910 and 1930, the village was also a ferry landing for passengers and freight crossing Long Island Sound to Bridgeport, Connecticut, so its storefronts served both residents and travelers. Street scenes like this one from the period are useful for seeing how small American towns organized their business districts before automobiles reshaped them.
