Pell Street, one of the narrow streets at the heart of Manhattan's Chinatown, appears here as a glass-plate negative made in the years just after 1900. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its color and black-and-white views of American places, produced this type of image for sale to travelers and collectors. By the early 1900s Chinatown had grown into a dense cluster of Chinese merchants, laundries, and tenements, and it drew curious visitors and reporters who often wrote about its crowded sidewalks and unfamiliar shopfronts.
