The lettering "Erie" and "Lackawanna" on the terminal buildings at right marks this as a working waterfront on the Hudson, where railroad companies ran ferries carrying passengers and freight between Manhattan and New Jersey, where trains continued west. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made many views of American cities and landmarks in the early 1900s, produced this large 8 x 10 inch glass negative, and its detail shows the ferry slips and the crowded, industrial edge of the city. Such images record how much of New York's commerce once moved by water before tunnels and bridges took over that work.
