Taken from the Cortlandt Street ferry slip on the Hudson, this view frames the City Investment Building and Singer Tower at the center, with the West Street Building at the right. All three rose during the first decade of the 1900s, when Lower Manhattan's skyline was changing quickly. The waterfront vantage point shows the new office towers looming over the piers and wharves that had handled the city's shipping for generations. The Detroit Publishing Company, which marketed large-format views of American cities and landscapes, made this glass-plate negative during those same years.
