Broadway looking north from Dey Street is one of the few views in this group that puts the street itself at the center, with the downtown avenue running away toward the uptown blocks. Dey Street sits just north of City Hall Park, so the scene captures the dense commercial core at the southern end of Broadway as the city was reshaping itself around elevated trains and rising office towers. The Detroit Publishing Company, which operated from the 1890s into the 1920s, produced large-format views like this one, often using the cyanotype process, a cheap and durable blueprint-style method that gives the print its distinctive blue tone. The company's catalog of American streets and landscapes was widely sold, making this picture a useful record of how the city looked around 1900.
