Wall Street in lower Manhattan, shown here as a busy commercial street in the years just after 1900, when the district was the center of American finance. The Detroit Publishing Company made this glass negative as part of its large body of views of American cities and landscapes, many of them later sold as color prints. Wall Street takes its name from the wooden palisade the Dutch built along the edge of their settlement, and by the early twentieth century its banks, exchanges and office towers had made it one of the most recognized streets in the country.
