Syracuse was a major stop on the New York Central Railroad, and this view records its depot in the years before the First World War. The 8 by 10 inch glass negative was made between 1900 and 1915 by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American cities, landscapes and rail travel for sale and promotion. Stations like this often gave travelers their first impression of a city, so such views documented local architecture and also advertised the lines that served them.
