Albany's New York Central station sat on the main line that carried passengers and freight up the Hudson Valley, linking the state capital to New York City and the Great Lakes route to the west. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative dates from roughly 1900 to 1910, a period when railroad stations were among the most prominent civic buildings in American cities and often signaled a town's place in the national network. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made the picture, was a commercial firm that photographed towns, rail lines, and scenic sites across the country and sold views to travelers and publishers. Its negatives like this one give a record of how the station and its surroundings looked before later rebuilding changed the area.
