The New York Central depot in Syracuse stood on the railroad's main line between Albany and Buffalo, and in the early 1900s a station like this one was often the first thing travelers saw of a city. This 8 by 10 inch glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to record American towns, rail lines, and scenery in the years around 1900. The large plate captured fine detail, which made such views useful for the company's commercial prints and booklets. Handwritten marks on the negative, including "H 103" and "extra," suggest how the plate was sorted and printed in the studio.
