Few American rail lines mattered more in the early 1900s than the New York Central, which carried passengers along the Hudson River between New York City and Buffalo, and Albany, the state capital, was one of its key stops. This view of the Albany station comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed towns, rail lines, and resorts across the country around 1900 to 1910 and sold the views as souvenirs and promotional material. The image was made on an 8 by 10 inch glass plate, a large format that captured fine detail in the building's facade and the surrounding street. The negative's catalog marks show how the company tracked its work, and the plate later entered the Library of Congress collection by way of a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
