Dated December 15, 1851, and labeled "Sunnyside," this portrait shows Washington Irving at his home on the Hudson near Tarrytown, where he lived from 1835 until his death in 1859. Irving had become one of America's first widely read literary figures with *The Sketch Book* and *Rip Van Winkle*, and by the 1850s he was an elder statesman of American letters. The drawing was made by Charles Martin and engraved by F. Halpin, then printed in New York in 1851. Its place name ties the image to the rambling stone house that Irving remodeled and that became a kind of landmark of the Hudson Valley.
