This bird's-eye lithograph presents the whole of Greater New York as a single panorama, the city as it stood after the 1898 consolidation of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island into one municipality. The record credits Charles Hart and the New York publisher Joseph Koehler, and gives a date of about 1905. Views like this were popular in the early 1900s, when readers wanted to grasp a fast-growing metropolis at a glance from an imagined height above the streets. The printed text accompanying the image adds explanatory context, and the color work shows how the city's waterways, bridges, and dense street grid were shaped into a readable map.
