Looking south down Woodward Avenue, one of Detroit's principal thoroughfares, this view shows the street railroad tracks laid along the roadway. The scene dates from roughly 1890 to 1910, a period when electric streetcars were replacing horse-drawn cars and changing how city residents moved about. The image is a glass dry plate negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented American cities and produced views for postcards and books. The wide perspective down the avenue offers a useful record of the street's traffic and buildings at the turn of the twentieth century.
