This view looks up Woodward Avenue, one of Detroit's principal thoroughfares, toward Central Methodist Episcopal Church, which the title names as the building anchoring the scene. The picture is a glass dry plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that documented American cities and towns in the early twentieth century, and the record dates it to between 1905 and 1920. Its large 8 by 10 inch format gave the photographer fine detail in the street and the church's masonry. Such street views record how a growing industrial city looked before the automobile reshaped its avenues.
