The house at 1123 Woodward Avenue was the home of Mrs. C.L. Stephens, and the Detroit Publishing Company recorded it in a view made between 1905 and 1915. The firm documented American cities, landscapes and architecture in those years. Woodward ran straight north from downtown and was one of Detroit's principal streets, lined with the residences of prosperous families before commercial development moved into many of those blocks. The 8 by 10 inch glass negative holds fine detail, which makes it a useful record of how a Detroit residential street looked in the early twentieth century.
