A bedroom in the residence of Mr. Fair at 40 Putnam Avenue in Detroit is the subject of this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, which the Detroit Publishing Company probably made between 1905 and 1915. The company, based in Detroit, sold views of American cities, landmarks and scenes of everyday life, and its large-format plates captured fine detail that smaller cameras could not. Interior views like this one are less common than street scenes and exteriors, so they offer a glimpse of how a middle-class household furnished and arranged its private rooms in the early twentieth century. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949.
