This 8-by-10-inch glass negative records a bedroom in the Detroit residence of Albert E. Silk, one of the few interior views in the set and a rare look at a private room rather than a street or landmark. Taken sometime between 1900 and 1910, it comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that photographed American cities, resorts, and scenery and sold the images widely. Large-format plates like this one captured fine detail in furnishings, bedding, and light falling across the room, giving a sense of how well-off Detroit households were furnished during the city's rapid growth. The negative later passed to the State Historical Society of Colorado and entered the Library of Congress collection.
