Inside the residence of Albert E. Silk in Detroit, a bedroom appears in a glass-plate negative made between 1900 and 1910. The Detroit Publishing Company, which operated from the 1890s into the 1920s, sent photographers across the city and region to record streets, businesses and private homes, and interior views like this one set the collection apart from its better-known street and landscape scenes. The 8 by 10 inch format captured fine detail in furnishings, bedding and wall treatments, which makes the room a useful record of domestic life in the period. The plate reached public holdings through a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
