The parlor of Mrs. H.C. Parke's Detroit residence is the focus here, and a tiger rug laid across the floor stands out as the most distinctive object in the room. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made views of the city and its surroundings for sale as postcards and prints in the early 1900s, recorded many such domestic interiors on large glass plates like this 8 by 10 inch negative. Parlors of this period were formal rooms for receiving guests, and photographs of them offer a useful look at how middle-class Detroit households furnished and decorated their homes around 1900 to 1910.
