Interior views of private homes were less typical of the Detroit Publishing Company's catalog, which leaned toward city streets, landscapes and resort scenes, so this view of the bedroom in the Douglas residence stands out. A cheval glass, the tilting freestanding mirror popular in Victorian and Edwardian bedrooms, sits in the room, and family portraits hang on the walls, offering a glimpse of everyday middle-class life before 1915. The company sold its photographs as commercial views and color prints, and this survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass negative, a format it used for its professional work.
