The hall and stairway of the Douglas residence in Detroit make a quiet interior study, recorded on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative. The Detroit Publishing Company, founded around the work of photographer William Henry Jackson, produced many views of the city's homes and public buildings in the years before 1915. Its images of staircases and entry halls show how a household of the period arranged woodwork, light, and circulation space. The negative later passed to the State Historical Society of Colorado before reaching the Library of Congress.
