Few interior views from this era capture an office building's working core as plainly as this one: the main corridor and stairway of the Majestic Building in Detroit, recorded on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative between about 1905 and 1915. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made the view, sold photographs of American cities to tourists and general readers, and its views of commercial interiors are much rarer than its street scenes. The negative has suffered damage, with its upper right corner shattered and cracks running downward, a reminder of how fragile large glass plates could be. Together, the image and its condition show how an early twentieth-century office block moved people between its floors.
