The Buhl Stamping Company building in Detroit is the subject here, a view of a metal-stamping plant of the kind that made sheet-metal goods in the years before 1915. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made large numbers of glass-plate views of American cities and industry in that era, produced the negative on 8 by 10 inch glass. Its record notes that the jacket once carried the title of an unrelated New York school, a reminder that the archive's catalog title for this view was assigned by a cataloger rather than taken from the photographer's own label. Industrial views like this one document factory architecture and the working city at the turn of the twentieth century.
