The Young Men's Christian Association building in Detroit, photographed around 1908, is preserved as an 8 by 10 inch glass plate negative, the kind of large-format plate that gave the Detroit Publishing Company its sharp views of American streets and buildings. By that time the YMCA had become a common fixture in growing industrial cities, offering young men who had moved to town for work a place to sleep, exercise, and find company. The negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which sold views of cities and landscapes across the country, and it later reached the Library of Congress as a gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949.
