Few civic buildings in downtown Detroit were as central to county life as the Wayne County Building, which housed county offices and courts. This 8 by 10 inch glass negative dates from between 1900 and 1920, a period when Detroit was growing quickly and its public buildings were meant to project permanence. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this view, built a large catalog of city and landscape scenes across the country, and its negatives preserve how civic architecture looked before later changes to the surrounding streets.
