The Wayne County Building, the seat of county government in downtown Detroit, is the subject of this view, shot on an 8 by 10 inch glass plate negative. Its Beaux-Arts design, with columns, classical ornament, and a monumental mass, reflects the civic confidence of Detroit in the early 1900s, when the city was growing rapidly. The Detroit Publishing Company produced large numbers of such views for sale to tourists and businesses, and this negative was catalogued in the company's Detroit series. The date is estimated from that 1906 catalog, so the photograph was likely made in or just before that year.
