The Wayne County Building was the seat of county government for Detroit and the surrounding county, so this view records a civic institution at the center of local courts and records offices. The glass negative dates from roughly 1902 to 1910, a period when Detroit was growing quickly on the strength of its automobile and manufacturing industries, and public buildings like this one were expanding to serve a larger population. The image came from the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that photographed American cities, landmarks, and scenery for sale as postcards and prints. Its large 8 by 10 inch plate gives unusually fine detail of the building's architecture and street setting.
