A sign advertising Belle Isle Park steamers every 20 minutes marks this view of the Wayne Hotel pavilion and its wharf on the Detroit waterfront. Steamboats carried day-trippers from the city's riverfront to Belle Isle, the island park in the Detroit River that had been developed as a public recreation ground in the late nineteenth century. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued views of American cities and resorts in the early twentieth century, made the large glass negative, and the picture shows how the riverfront served as a gateway to summer leisure before the automobile reshaped such outings.
