The view centers on the Hotel Pontchartrain and the plaza in front of it, a detail that sets it apart from other downtown Detroit scenes on this board. The hotel was a prominent downtown landmark when this was taken around 1908, a period when Detroit's automobile boom was filling its streets and drawing visitors and business travelers to new commercial buildings. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for documenting American cities and landscapes in the early twentieth century, made the exposure on glass plate negatives. Two variant negatives survive, so the same scene was captured more than once.
