Boats fill the water in this view of a parade on the canal at Belle Isle, the island park in the Detroit River that the city had developed as a public green space by the early 1900s. The image survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative, a format that gave early photographers sharp detail across large scenes. It came from the Detroit Publishing Company, which issued thousands of views of American cities and landscapes around 1900 to 1910. Naval parades and ceremonial water events drew large crowds to the island, so the photograph captures a popular civic occasion as well as a view of the park's waterways.
