The canal in this view runs through the wooded interior of Belle Isle, the island park in the Detroit River that the city acquired in 1879 and developed into one of its principal recreation grounds. Its winding water and shaded banks reflect the naturalistic design that shaped the island's landscape, which was meant to offer city residents a retreat from the industrial streets just across the river. The glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that photographed American cities and scenery around the turn of the twentieth century and sold the views widely as postcards and prints. Pictures like this one give a useful record of how the park looked in its early decades.
