A water parade winds along the canal on Belle Isle, the island park in the Detroit River that the city acquired in 1879 and developed into one of its major public recreation grounds. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this glass-plate negative around 1908, produced thousands of views of American cities, parks and waterways for sale to tourists and publishers. Its catalog listings for Belle Isle often feature boats and crowds, which show how the island served as a gathering place for ceremonies and leisure on the water.
