The subject here is a water parade on Belle Isle, the island park in the Detroit River that the city developed in the late nineteenth century with landscape design influenced by Frederick Law Olmsted's firm. Parades of decorated boats were a popular summer diversion for Detroiters, drawing crowds to the shoreline and the lagoons. This negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm whose photographers documented American cities and resorts for postcards and printed views around 1900. Its large 8 by 10 inch glass plate gives unusual detail of the crowds, vessels, and waterfront setting.
