Belle Isle, an island park in the Detroit River, is the setting for this view of a footbridge spanning one of its waterways. The city bought the island in 1879 and turned it into a public park laid out with winding drives, lawns, and water features, a plan that drew on the landscape ideas of Frederick Law Olmsted. The Detroit Publishing Company, which recorded many American towns and parks in the early 1900s, made this glass negative sometime between 1900 and 1910. Its record lists bridges and canals as subjects, showing how the island's engineered water passages were part of its appeal as a place for strolling and boating.
