This 8-by-10-inch glass negative shows the Belle Isle Conservatory, a glasshouse in the Belle Isle park, an island in the Detroit River that the city had developed as a public park since the 1880s. The conservatory was built to hold tropical and seasonal plants for the park's visitors and gardens, and its glass dome and greenhouse wings made it a landmark of the city's parkland. The picture comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American cities and sold views as postcards and souvenir books in the early 1900s, so the negative records how the city presented its public spaces to residents and tourists alike.
