Belle Isle, a 982-acre island park in the Detroit River, is the setting for this view of a bridge over one of its waterways, which the record lists among its canal subjects. The island was laid out with landscape designs by Frederick Law Olmsted and Jacob Wrey Mould in the 1880s, and by the early 1900s its winding drives, lagoons, and footbridges had made it a popular place for Detroiters to escape the city. The picture survives as an 8 x 10 inch glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that documented American towns and landscapes in this period.
