Belle Isle, an island park in the Detroit River, was the focus of this view of one of its bridges. The city bought the island in 1879 and developed it into a public park with winding drives, lagoons, and footpaths, and the bridges that crossed its waterways let carriage and foot traffic move through the landscape. The Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American towns and scenery in the late 1800s and early 1900s, made this glass negative between about 1895 and 1910, when the park was becoming a favorite summer destination for city residents.
